‘Eastenders’ has seen its fair share of both drag queens and landladies who dressed like drag queens over the years – but there are very few who’ve been invited on the soap to perform as themselves. In 2015, Ian Stroughair aka Miss Velma Celli got to do just that, singing and high-kicking across The Old Vic as if her life depended on it. Ian himself described the experience as ‘camp as tits’ and presumably if you’ve been in as many West End musical productions as he has, that’s something you’d know all about.
For the past couple of years, Ian has been touring the world as Velma Celli in a solo show, ‘Iconic – A Brief History of Drag’, receiving huge critical acclaim and delighting audiences with a dazzling combination of razor-sharp wit and an incredible singing voice as he weaves personal anecdotes together with stories celebrating the most iconic moments of drag in popular culture.
Hilarious, poignant and hugely relevant it’s not to be missed.
Velma is bringing ‘A Brief History of Drag’ to Crazy Coqs at Brasserie Zedel on 16th December.
