Our New Year’s Resolution

New Years Resolution

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Apparently nearly half of us do so every January. Of course, the tradition of self-reflection and making commitments to self-improvement is as old as the hills. Babylonians made promises to their gods that they would return borrowed objects and repay debts. You can bet your boots that come February, however, many an old Babylonian would still be running up whatever the ancient equivalent of a credit card bill would have been and next door’s lawnmower would still be in the garage…

Fact is, by the 9th of January there’s a 28% chance that most of us will have already given up on whatever pledges we’ve made. 2 weeks after that 38% will have succumbed, 42% after a month and a grand total of 56% of us will have caved in after 6 months.

The reason New Year’s resolutions fail is that we set unrealistic goals for ourselves. We think the aim is to keep it simple.

So with that in mind, Balans Soho Society, in the immortal words of Edina Monsoon in ‘Ab Fab’ when asked what her resolutions would be, has just decided this year to ‘HAVE MORE FUN’. Life is short and we have to make the most of it.

Getting fit, learning a new language or stopping smoking are all brilliant ambitions, but let’s face it, nothing is ever going to beat sharing food and drink and raucous laughter with friends to make you feel better.

Happy New Year, everyone!
